Discovery

Created in 2005, Discovery is the collaboration of Rostam Batmanglij (the keyboardist from Vampire Weekend) and Wes Miles (The vocalist from Ra Ra Riot). They released their debut (and only, so far) album, LP, in July 2009 - music critic Patrick Sisson described it as "filled with innocent, lovelorn lyrics and the last 30 years' worth of guilty-pleasure keyboard cliches" while John Meagher (of the Belfast Telegraph) said it was "appalling".

decide for yourself by downloading the 10 song album, LP, here

so far, my favorite is 'Swing Tree' - though a little postal service collides with Jens Lekman with hints of a 90's boy band, the song is amusing, upbeat, and definitely an early summer anthem.

Marina and the Diamonds

The past week or so I've been listening almost nonstop to Marina and the Diamonds, a 24 year old half-Greek half-Welsh singer songwriter whose real name is Marina Lambrini Diamandis. (According to wikipedia, 'Diamandis' means 'diamonds' in Greek...) She has an extremely powerful, full and gorgeous voice, and her music is upbeat and dramatic - I think a Mama Mia or Moving Out - esq musical is in order.

Download her new (and only full-length) album The Family Jewels

or listen to a few of my favorites:

TwinSisterMoon

TwinSisterMoon is the solo project of French Mehdi Ameziane, half of the duo Natural Snow Buildings. TwinSisterMoon classifies her music as "experimental psychedelic folk", and her first album, When Stars Glide Through Solid, is a slightly disconcerting, hauntingly beautiful tangle of Nico-esq vocals, echoing guitar and distorted reverb.

Babies

Pardon the theme of young children in the recent posts - if any of you know anything about me, then you're not surprised. I saw the movie 'Babies' last night, and not only was it too adorable for words, but it had a great soundtrack. I can't find more than a one minute preview available for download for most of the songs, but I've posted the full track list and if you're not as cheap as I am I recommend buying it on itunes.

  1. The Perpetual Self, or "What Would Saul Alinsky Do?" - Sufjan Stevens (full song)

  3. Les Bébés
  4. Hattie

Oh, the temptation

Oh, The Temptation from Steve V on Vimeo.

A video on a study done by Dr. Walter Mischel, in which he tested delayed gratification in preschool age children; the experimenter gave each child a marshmallow and said that they had to go do something in the other room. They then told the child that he or she could either eat the marshmallow now or wait until the experimenter got back and then have 2 marshmallows. They filmed the kids while the experimenter was out of the room, and it's really too cute.

Sugar Pie Honey Bunch - The Temptations

Tempted - Squeeze

Tempted to Touch - Rupee

summersummersummer

Summer is so close and yet, so far. The weather's been shitty, morale is down, students are trudging through their finals.... enjoy this song not only for it's inspirational chorus; "I have been sad for so long / but I know I'll be fine in the summer, in the summer, in the summer, in the summer..." but for the soothing harmonies and the girl's cute little veil-hat.

Novos Baianos

This video is of the Brazilian group Novos Baianos singing their 1972 song "A Menina Dança", off their album Acabou Chorare. The adorable singer is Baby Consuelo, and I think watching her groove on this fuzzy footage is just as enjoyable as the song itself. Go, Baby Consuelo, Go!

Avi Buffalo

Avi Buffalo is a high school - hailing group consisting of Avi Zahner-Isenberg (short for Avigor Zahner Isenberg ... I'm guessing he was Bar Mitzvah-ed..), Rebecca Coleman (maybe she was too? Well, Bat...), Arin Fazio and Sheridan Riley. The group met at their school in Long Beach, Cali and, though young, are badass enough to be on the radar of the Long Beach Police Department; due to Avi's "really tasteless brutal speaker gargling" (his words, not mine), he and his pals can no longer rehears in their own garage.

However, there's nothing "tasteless" (or "brutal" or "gargling...") about these songs - they echoey electric guitar riffs and high pitched harmonizing make you want to buy popsicles from an ice cream truck in the late 60s and run a stick along a metal fence. In a good way.
