Lemonade

Lemonade is a Brooklyn - based trio. That's about all I know.

Delorean are a Spanish quartet formed in 2000. They typically combine punk rock and electronic music which they perfect in their own nightclub, Desperrame. After their popularity increased due to a successful visit to SXSW in 2007, the group toured with jj and Miike Snow. However, most of their fame is still due to their smashing remixes (oh, and yes - they were named after the famous Delorean from Back to the Future)

Lemonade + Delorean = greatness. It's like a really hyper kindergardener smashed into a stoned lifeguard and they went clubbing.

Black Magic

The Magic Wands are Nashville-based duo Chris and Dexy Valentine. Here's a lovely review and summary of Magic Wands' music... a distorted, super indie, retro guitar sound. Fun.

Tennis

l_dc1cc76f6686450f84f76473d5f5a4a7.jpg

To quote from the band Tennis's record label, Underwater Peoples Records, "Patrick and Alaina [the members of Tennis] bought a boat together and sailed around the ocean. They dodged freighters, waded squalls, swam ashore in the bahamas, ate at restaurants with named like "Spanky's", and got married. With no destination in mind, the trip led them to the songs heard on this recording" ("This recording" refers to their album Tennis 7")

So, listen: it's better than the sport.

Françoise Hardy

Because of the warm weather and my frequent long car rides, I've recently been drawn to cinematic songs that would compliment a harmless and pleasant montage of sunsets, open roads, and flowers in deep focus swaying back and forth.

But this song isn't nearly as contrived or lame, just harmless and pleasant.

First released by Françoise Madeline Hardy in 1962, it was later recorded into:

English ("Find Me a Boy") in 1964

Italian ("Quelli Della Mia Etá) in 1963

and German ("Peter und Lou") in 1965

my favorite is still the original French, which you can stream and download here:

Sunshine

Another lazy lolling beat for lazy day-drinking summer sundays. Listen through the first few lines (which, while crude, can hit close to home...) and hold out for the more poetic "Ain't nothing like the sound of the leaves / When the breeze penetrates these southside trees", etc.

Joanna Newsom + The Roots = Perfection

Found this gem on the blog Pretty Much Amazing. Any attempt that I would make to describe and praise this rework of Joanna Newsom's already sassy song The Book of Right-On (Off her album The Milk-Eyed Mender) would fall short of The Roots' new version, from their album How I Got Over.

too good.

And the living is easy...

A twist to the classic "Summertime" - very different than both the Ella and the Sublime versions. "Guts" takes only the big band trumpet sound and a few lyrics here and there, creating a big, sultry sound perfect for driving at dusk. (or maybe for a Bud Light commercial..?)

Internal Combustion

I couldn't find much about Phillip Oskar Augustine on the world wide web (though he's from Columbia, South Carolina and his real name is Tyler Wallace), but give this short track a listen - because Washed Out's Ernest Greene contributed rhythm synth, it's a bit like the Magnetic Fields or Of Montreal created the electro-instrumentals and Avi Buffalo/the Shins collaborated on the vocals ... and it all turned out really, really well.

Manu Chao

Though Manu Chao has been around for awhile (I've loved his song Me Gustas Tu ever since I listened to it in 7th grade Spanish class), I've recently revisited him and fallen in love again. The French/Spanish Manu Chao (born José-Manuel Thomas Arthur Chao) sings in French, Spanish, Arabic, English, and Portuguese, and began his career in the french band Hot Pants. He later founded the band Mano Negra with his brother Antoine Chao in 1987, and became a solo artist after the band's break up in 1995.

My favorite album is 'Clandestino', in which Chao uses a few fantastic hooks over again to create a seamless wall of sexy sound. Play it at any dinner party for instant mood-booster. I like to drive to work listening to it, imagining I'm going somewhere more exotic than the local preschool...

Post-Everything

Hey!

I’m the other person who talks between songs on Radio Limnology (returning in September!), Ezra. I’m gonna post here now too. For my first post I figured I’d tell you about something you probably already know about, just to really bring it home. If you don’t already know, you should read the New York Times magazine from last Sunday, follow M.I.A. on twitter, or get some friends.

M.I.A.’s new album is dropping in just over a month (July 13). In a true homage to coolness and postverbal communication, it is called “/ \ / \ / \ Y / \” That’s some slashes and a “y,” folks. It’s supposed to be a “stylized representation” of “Maya,” which is M.I.A.’s real name, but really it just looks like nothing. But looking like nothing is what being übercool is all about! (Example: invisible people, the coolest people.)

So far, M.I.A. has released three tracks from the album, including the already infamous “Born Free,” which features almost no music or words, and a music video featuring a nine-minute graphic ginger-killing rampage. If you don’t like red headed boys and you do like watching people die/explode, then it’s for you. If not, welcome to the kingdom of nice-personhood. The most recent track she’s released is called “I’m a Singer” and features okay political rapping and not great singing. Thanks for that one, / \ / \ / \ Y / \.

The most good track so far is “XXXO,” which has a lot going on but seems like progress from her previous work and isn’t annoying/scary/offensive/poorly executed. It’s a little edgy (the chorus is “you want me be somebody who I’m really not,” thanks for teaching our kids about how be somebody who is really not a grammarian), and a lot electro-pop, but it works and even has a Quentin Tarrantino shoutout! What’s not to like?

French Connection

Growing a little bored of the top hits in the US, I recently turned to the french top 100 and found some gems. Not only do you sound cultured (or snobby..?) by casually putting on an international jam at a party, but you can also enjoy the bangin' beat without taking offense to the presumably dirty lyrics (assuming you don't speak french).

Discovery

Created in 2005, Discovery is the collaboration of Rostam Batmanglij (the keyboardist from Vampire Weekend) and Wes Miles (The vocalist from Ra Ra Riot). They released their debut (and only, so far) album, LP, in July 2009 - music critic Patrick Sisson described it as "filled with innocent, lovelorn lyrics and the last 30 years' worth of guilty-pleasure keyboard cliches" while John Meagher (of the Belfast Telegraph) said it was "appalling".

decide for yourself by downloading the 10 song album, LP, here

so far, my favorite is 'Swing Tree' - though a little postal service collides with Jens Lekman with hints of a 90's boy band, the song is amusing, upbeat, and definitely an early summer anthem.

Marina and the Diamonds

The past week or so I've been listening almost nonstop to Marina and the Diamonds, a 24 year old half-Greek half-Welsh singer songwriter whose real name is Marina Lambrini Diamandis. (According to wikipedia, 'Diamandis' means 'diamonds' in Greek...) She has an extremely powerful, full and gorgeous voice, and her music is upbeat and dramatic - I think a Mama Mia or Moving Out - esq musical is in order.

TwinSisterMoon

TwinSisterMoon is the solo project of French Mehdi Ameziane, half of the duo Natural Snow Buildings. TwinSisterMoon classifies her music as "experimental psychedelic folk", and her first album, When Stars Glide Through Solid, is a slightly disconcerting, hauntingly beautiful tangle of Nico-esq vocals, echoing guitar and distorted reverb.

Babies

Pardon the theme of young children in the recent posts - if any of you know anything about me, then you're not surprised. I saw the movie 'Babies' last night, and not only was it too adorable for words, but it had a great soundtrack. Oh, the temptation

Oh, The Temptation from Steve V on Vimeo.

A video on a study done by Dr. Walter Mischel, in which he tested delayed gratification in preschool age children; the experimenter gave each child a marshmallow and said that they had to go do something in the other room. They then told the child that he or she could either eat the marshmallow now or wait until the experimenter got back and then have 2 marshmallows. They filmed the kids while the experimenter was out of the room, and it's really too cute.

Tempted - Squeeze

Tempted to Touch - Rupee

summersummersummer

Summer is so close and yet, so far. The weather's been shitty, morale is down, students are trudging through their finals.... enjoy this song not only for it's inspirational chorus; "I have been sad for so long / but I know I'll be fine in the summer, in the summer, in the summer, in the summer..." but for the soothing harmonies and the girl's cute little veil-hat.

Novos Baianos

This video is of the Brazilian group Novos Baianos singing their 1972 song "A Menina Dança", off their album Acabou Chorare. The adorable singer is Baby Consuelo, and I think watching her groove on this fuzzy footage is just as enjoyable as the song itself. Go, Baby Consuelo, Go!

Avi Buffalo

Avi Buffalo is a high school - hailing group consisting of Avi Zahner-Isenberg (short for Avigor Zahner Isenberg ... I'm guessing he was Bar Mitzvah-ed..), Rebecca Coleman (maybe she was too? Well, Bat...), Arin Fazio and Sheridan Riley. The group met at their school in Long Beach, Cali and, though young, are badass enough to be on the radar of the Long Beach Police Department; due to Avi's "really tasteless brutal speaker gargling" (his words, not mine), he and his pals can no longer rehears in their own garage.

However, there's nothing "tasteless" (or "brutal" or "gargling...") about these songs - they echoey electric guitar riffs and high pitched harmonizing make you want to buy popsicles from an ice cream truck in the late 60s and run a stick along a metal fence. In a good way.

jj

jj is a super mysterious, super sexy Swedish band that not only has fantastic original songs, but also can do a mean cover (and we all know how I feel about covers). The band released their debut album jj n°2 with the Sweedish indie label 'Sincerely Yours' in early 2009. In December of last year the group announced that the American label 'Secretly Canadian' signed jj, and their new album, jj n°3, was released on March 9, 2010. As I said, I love a good cover, so here are some of their best, posted with the songs they're re-making.

Welcome Back - jj (youtube)
